Mac VandenBrink

Mac was the father of the ALLEN "SmartScope" and still is considered today on the Internet, the Ignition GURU. With 28 years of research, designing and engineering automotive test equipment and teaching automotive diagnosis, he has a passion to share, what he has learned over the years.

In spite of a lifelong history as liaison between electronic and automotive engineers, he has the knack of teaching a complicated technology down to simple logical reasoning. Even when you have heard him before, his variety of different ways to explain the logic of electronics is always new and inspiring. Mac firmly believes that Scope analysis is a science that must be understood, in terms of analyzing instead of memorizing, before diagnosis becomes fully effective

Native Dutchman, Canadian Citizen, U.S. Resident

Educator & Consultant

Kalamazoo, Mich.

Mac's specialty is:

Combustion
&
Ignition Analysis

He teaches that scope analysis with an engine analyzer goes beyond the ignition system and he takes his class on a tour of exploring the electron behavior inside the combustion chamber. He believes that In addition to ignition circuit and component problems, there are a lot of mechanical and fuel mixture conditions that also affect the ignition spark cycle (plug firing and discharge event). Understanding these conditions and being able to recognize, and verify them, helps the technician to "fix it right the first time". Many ignition and combustion problems can trick the scan tool into setting incorrect codes and providing false data which will often lead the inexperienced technician down the wrong, and expensive, road to repair.

He is a firm believer, that diagnosis is not a simple matter of matching a scope pattern to a problem. It takes a series of observations at various speeds that may lead to the correct diagnosis. And to sort that all out, requires a basic understanding of how the internal combustion engine works, what effects it, plus a thought process to think it out..

Mac's sessions walks you through what is both normal and abnormal and how to make it act up, isolating the problem from other similar conditions. Exploring "what makes it tick" makes servicing the automobile on a day to day basis, no longer just a routine but an enjoyable and profitable way to "fix cars".

He is a part of the LINDERTECH team for the
 GURU CLASSES.
