Frequently Asked Questions About Fuel Injectors

Why should I use “Reconditioned” fuel injectors from Linder Technical Service?

LTS has been “Reconditioning” fuel injectors for over 13 years. We have sold over 400,000 injectors in that time. LTS has developed the most thorough test procedure in the industry. Not only do we clean and flow test the injector, we also test the injector’s coil integrity on our custom-built load bench. LTS has the largest inventory, over a 1,000 part numbers, of  “Flow Matched” sets of injectors ready to ship.

LTS is more than just another injector reconditioning company; we also train automotive technicians across the country on fuel injection systems and how to service them. Another difference is that we service fuel-injected vehicles. Our dyno shop performs fuel injection service on most makes and models. LTS also offers to our customers a free technical support hotline that is staffed by ASE Certified Technicians.

Are Linder Technical injectors rebuilt?

No. They are “Reconditioned”, which is an ultrasonic cleaning and back flushing procedure. The word rebuild implies that you would physically get inside the injector and change parts. Since injectors are sealed units that is a difficult task to perform. Some companies do rebuild injectors and change out parts with inferior components. They also consolidate part numbers which compromises flow rating to engine application. All LTS injectors do receive new OEM quality o-rings, filters and pintle caps when applicable.

Can Linder Technical change the flow rate of an injector?

No. In most cases you would have to go inside the injector and change the lift of the metering component. We have seen injectors that have had this procedure done, most of the time the flow indifference on a set is so great it’s hard to believe they would run an engine.

How do you “Flow Match” injectors?

LTS has the capability of cleaning 64 injectors at a time using our 8 ASNU machines. Once the injectors are clean, their flow rate is recorded. Injectors that flow within specification are then put into sets. By doing such a large quantity we can “Flow Match” sets to near perfect performance.

How do injectors become clogged?

Injectors become clogged one of two ways. First there is clogging from fuel system contamination. This means that the injector is restricted at the fuel inlet. It can happen from many different situations. You may be buying dirt at your local gas station and not realizing it. (Do you ever fill your tank while a transport truck is unloading fuel at the station?) Sometimes fuel, do to a lack of additives, may react with your fuel system components and cause deterioration. Lack of fuel in your tank promotes condensation, which can cause rust. Someone may sabotage your fuel system. Secondly, an injector can become clogged or restricted at the discharge end. This may happen do to lack of additives in the fuel that reduce carbon build. It could be from driving habits. Another reason is injector design or engine design. The end result is carbon or coking at the discharge end of the injector that restricts fuel flow or distorts the spray pattern. If injectors clog at the discharge end, it is recommended that an intake cleaning be done before installing a different set of injectors.

How do I know if I need to have my injectors serviced?

The most correct answer to this question is that you have had them diagnosed by a professional technician and they were deemed faulty. There are other reasons to have them serviced or at least checked out.

  1. You are rebuilding the engine.
  2. It’s a high mileage vehicle and you've noticed increased fuel consumption.
  3. Your “check engine” light is on and there is a fuel system related code.
  4. You have failed an emission inspection.
  5. You noticed a driveability problem: Poor idle, loss of performance, hesitation, hard starting, detonation, surging or misfiring.

Note: If an injector is leaking external from the body or the connector area it needs to be discarded. This is usually from an internal o-ring and is non-repairable.

Does gas tank additive injector cleaner work?

The primary purpose of tank additive cleaner is maintenance. Even though some have been known to clean up injectors with minor restrictions. In most cases you get what you pay for, the more it costs the better it works. Depending on type of fuel used and driving characteristics, adding tank additive a couple times a year is good preventative maintenance.

What are “pattern failure” injectors?

Through the years, Linder Technical has identified many injectors the fail. It may be from the coil winding shorting out, an internal o-ring that causes them to leak externally or they are prone to dripping from the discharge, even if you clean them. Once we identify a “pattern failure” injector, LTS finds a suitable replacement that can be installed without any modifications. This way our customers can install a fresh set of injectors worry free.
