Chevrolet Mallory Distributor Conversion for 1949-1953 Flathead Ford

Mallory distributors for a flathead are kind of hard to find and old Chevrolet V8 Mallory units are in abundance.

The following pictorial illustrates what our typical conversion consists of.

Step one is to clean degrease and disassemble the Mallory distributor.

Chevrolet shaft needs to be machined off just a little on the lower part to allow the original flathead drive gear to fit.

Advance weights are cleaned , degreased and lubed prior to reassembly. Top plate reinstalled with contact points etc...

Distributor is then spun on machine and contacts adjusted. Note this one has a four lobe cam and dwell per contact set is using the four cylinder scale. As we will not be using a dual coil, a jumper wire will be installed to tie the contact sets together for using a single condenser and standard ignition coil.

A half shim is used to set the clearance for gear. Locktite the gear and drill for roll pin.

Distributor is run on a test machine. Maximum advance is adjusted to 12° distributor or 24° engine and timing curve is set . Advance all in at 2500 rpm.

Distributor is then placed on our distributor display timing cover to center the drive gear to the camshaft location (center of the hole) and housing marked with black tape.
Unit will be installed and held in place with two set screws on the car. No cylinder head clamp is needed.
