Chevrolet Distributor Conversion for 1949-1953 Flathead Ford |
|
| The original flathead used a vacuum unit that
worked very well assuming the engine has good vacuum as designed and the
fuel and camshaft designs were in stock form. The addition of multiple carbs,
more radical camshafts and old vacuum units make the old system not really
functional and after market replacements are somewhat expensive. After seeing a number of flathead conversions from various distributor units, we decided to make up our own conversion using the ever popular and super reliable Chevrolet V8 unit. |
|
The following pictorial illustrates what our typical conversion consists of. |
|
| Our cores are disassembled, degreased and machined to the original Ford size measurements. | |

All parts are then polished, beaded and painted for reassembly. Distributor advance is limited with upper cam bushing to allow 24 degrees of mechanical advance. Unit is set up for no vacuum advance as it is no longer needed with the flathead applications. Vacuum unit could be added if required by customer. |
|
|
New drive gears are installed as well. Note : Ford unit is shown. The Merc unit is also available with extended shaft from lower gear. |
All new parts are installed and adjusted on machine. |

Complete unit is ran on distributor machine, adjusted and curved to allow 24 degrees of advance at 2500 rpm. Units are ran for 15 minutes at 5000 rpm and retested and adjusted if needed prior to shipment. |
