331 Caddy Flamethrower Rebuild |
| The Grant Flamethrower was (and still is) a super ignition system. Using two sets of Ignition contacts it allows a V-8 to actually use twin four banger ignition systems and place the ignition cables side for side. Higher dwell allows a longer coil build up for a increased spark output. | |
The following pictorial illustrates what our typical rebuild consists of. |
| Ok lets take 'er apart. There is a bolt that goes thru the unit (could be left or right threads based on engine rotation). Carefully loosen this bolt with 7/16 wrench confirming threading, etc. Once this bolt is slightly loose, tap lightly! This will loosen the cone drive allowing the bottom end to come loose when the two retaining nuts are removed. On half the units we see, these weights are broken because someone pulled on the bottom end without doing this. | |

| The entire advance unit was gone in this one, it had been a race car with a locked advance (lower end brazed together with brass rod). Luckily we had an extra Ford FE Grant laying on the bench as a parts donor. | |

| A rotor inspection finds a very nice pair of rotors! And a very bad set of bearings. Time alone seems to kill these. A light glass bead and some purple power cleans up the housings. | |

| The condensers we use are Vertex Mag condenser and have a rating of .40. Somewhat higher than the normal .28, but seems to add some contact life on the units we are driving on the street. Used with the correct ignition coil (Bosch Blues), they will run a long time in a hot rod without any maintenance. Sync the contacts on our "Dizzy" machine. Each set of contacts use a 60 degree setting (four cyl. scale) and then the plate is adjusted to allow each cylinder to be 45 degrees apart. Have to set each side by itself. Run on tester at 8,000 rpm for over 5 minutes and then primer the unit. This customer wanted the factory Chevrolet orange color. Some primer, some orange and a clearcoat…shiny for sure! Allow to dry, clean the caps for new numbers and polish the brass contacts then ship 'er to another happy customer! | |
